Interview: Happy Jawbone Family Band
Happy Jawbone Family Band is a fantastic assembly of weird from Vermont. They play upbeat pop songs with the same throwback jangle of Dr. Dog and Edward Sharpe, yet trade in their lyrics and imagery for something far less linear.
For example check out the song “I Have To Speak With Rocky Balboa” where they sing about “snakes in the fridge” or “lions on the beach“. Or, perhaps “Stay-at-Home Soldier” that boasts “The city I live in lays covered in cream and ladies walk on crackers.”
They are rooted in a universe slightly different than our own, yet manage to craft shiny pop gems that have the charm of a backyard party with friends.
On Saturday November 16th Happy Jawbone Family Band brings their brand of party to Kung Fu Necktie in Philadelphia. I spoke with their leader Luke Csehak this morning about the “family”, New England restaurants, and his issues with Rocky Balboa.
