Ya hey! Ya hey! Ya hey! By Sunday night at 9:05pm as we sing these words in chorus and remark about the drunk girl on the grass, we will be sun-scorched and hoarse from a weekend at Firefly Music Festival in the DE.

The Lumineers have cancelled due to illness, but Sunday still closes strong with Passion Pit and Vampire Weekend…who have the album of the year in my mind. Sorry Yeezus. Plus, they let Foster The People close out so you have time to get to your car.

Beyond my own personal favorites, there is something for everyone. Tom Petty for Dad, Calvin Harris for Sis, and Red Hot Chili Peppers for Brah. Not to knock any of them, I too have “found love in a hopeless place” and still turn “American Girl” up to 11. However the real treat of this weekend is a few emerging bands that are worth your time. Here are five standouts that you should wait to get a beer until after. Who knows, you might fall in love with something new.

Kishi Bashi – Sun @ 3:30pm

I’m not sure how this beautiful dreamy layered world pop plays at a Speedway in Dover, but I want to find out. Dust off your DMB-white-kid dance for “Bright Whites” and hold her a touch closer if he plays “Manchester”

Dragonette – Fri @ 8:30pm

Canadian Electro-Pop? IN! There’s something really fun about this album. It’s dance without pretension and mostly, if not entirely void of Wahhhhhh BRAWAWAWAWA. Ya know? There’s something 90’s and light to it which makes for a perfect summer night.

CHVRCHES – Sat @ 5:45pm

Buzz, buzz, buzz. Lots of music blogs have jumped on this band. They played Fallon for their US TV debut this week. “Recover” hasn’t gotten out of my head yet, and “The Mother We Share” has already started to work its way in there. Does all of this mean nothing to you? Then see them Saturday so you have something to say when the mousey girl with the dream catcher tattoo talks about the album in September. Start here.

Kopecky Family Band – Sat @ 12:15pm

You know these guys. “I-I-I could do for youuuuu”. Not really a family, really a band. A damn fine band. Big guitars and a car full of other instruments. It’s music that intertwines. Thumps your chest and then lulls you into a sway. I can’t wait to see them outside. Get to know these folks, they sold out last time in town and will be around for a while.

Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra – Sun @ 7:15pm

I missed “Theatre Is Evil” when it came out last year, and for the most part ignored The Dresden Dolls for years. HOLY F!#$K was I wrong. Rarely, have I been more wrong. Palmer is weird and beautiful, dripping with emotion of gut-wrenching sorrow and seam-busting aggression, all served with a side of snark and sincerity. Yep, all in one place. Dresden Dolls fans, this is nothing new for you. See her!
