Caught In The Web: Kramer’s Thoughts On Skrillex

I’m still not entirely sure what Skrillex is. For the past couple of months I thought it was some form of medication. Perhaps a topical cream. But I was way off.

It’s apparently a “part of a new generation of artists that refuse to be restricted by preconceived notions or outside expectations.” That’s according to the Skrillex website. Yep, that clarifies it.

I just figured out who Tyler The Creator was a couple of months ago, now this? Slow down kids.

Never wanting to be left, behind I plugged in for a listening session this morning. I at first thought songs like “First Of The Year – Equinox” and “Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites” were skipping. Something seemed to be wrong with Spotify. But no, everything seemed to be in working order.

Was I having an aneurysm? Was the twitching in my eye related to the sounds I was hearing? Is my computer speaking violent German? No, apparently that’s just the way it sounds.

Upon further research, Skrillex is the work of Sonny Moore. Sonny is the former lead singer of From First To Last, a band which I happen to enjoy, or at least did at one point in my life. But this new venture I can only describe as what music you enjoy sounds like as it struggles and gasps for air while it cracks and breaks in a garbage disposal. Too much?

Look, it’s not my taste. It doesn’t quite jive with my current listens of INXS and Bon Iver. But I get that there’s an audience. I am obviously not in that audience.

Just to make sure, I thought I would check with Kramer to make sure I wasn’t alone. His reaction was very similar.
